Benjamin and David Scharps Legal Essay Competition

The Scharps Legal Essay Competition is open to juniors and seniors (or underclassmen who have that status based on credit hours) at state-operated campuses who are interested in legal issues, or are interested in pursuing a career in the legal field. The topic of this year’s essay competition is Student Rights in College Athletics.

The Scharps Award is offered in accordance with a gift accepted by the State University of New York Board of Trustees under the will of Hannah S. Hirschhorn to establish the Benjamin and David Scharps Memorial Fund.

One award of $1,500 will be presented to the student who has written the best 2,000 word essay describing the role and relevance of law in dealing with a current legal issue. A second award of $1,000 will be presented to the runner-up.

Students must submit their essays and application cover sheets to the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships by 5:00pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2017.

2017 Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program (SIFP)

The Smithsonian is now accepting applications for the 2017 Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program (SIFP) and affiliated programs.

Graduate, pre-doctoral, and postdoctoral students as well as conservators and senior scholars, have the opportunity to conduct independent research and study related to Smithsonian facilities, collections, and experts.

Humanity in Action Fellowship

Applications for the programs in Europe and the US are now open.
• Humanity in Action Fellowship programs in Europe (Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sarajevo and Warsaw): May 26 – June 25, 2017.
• John Lewis Fellowship program in Atlanta, Georgia: July 5 – 30, 2017.

The program invites applications from students and recent graduates of U.S. colleges and universities who are passionate about active and responsible citizenship, diversity and human rights. Current sophomores, juniors and seniors as well as graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2015 and 2016 are eligible.

The deadline to apply to these programs is January 4, 2017 at 11:59pm PST.
